Will Installing Aftermarket Parts Void My Car’s Warranty?

If your car needs repair, a warranty can cover hefty out-of-pocket fees. However, like any other contract, car warranties come with rules and regulations. Many drivers assume that if they install aftermarket modifications on their cars, it can void their warranty. However, most modifications which don’t affect performance won’t void your car’s warranty

Here’s what you need to know about aftermarket products and your car warranty.

What is a Car Warranty?

A car warranty, or manufacturer’s warranty, is an auto service contract that comes with certified pre-owned or new cars from a dealership. These warranties generally cover the vehicle for 30,000 miles or three years, whichever comes first. A car warranty provides coverage for repair costs for broken parts that are caused by defects in a manufacturer’s installation or design. These warranties do NOT provide coverage for normal wear and tear or any damages caused by collisions.

Extended auto warranties provide coverage after your manufacturer’s warranty has expired. You can obtain an extended warranty from a third-party provider or the dealership you purchased the vehicle from.

Both of these warranties require you to uphold your end of the bargain. If you fail to do so, it can void your car warranty.

What Mods Void a Car Warranty?

After you buy a new vehicle, you might want to personalize it with aftermarket modifications. However, many owners avoid doing so because they think this will void their car warranties.

In actuality, this is hardly the case. Car warranties are governed by a Federal statute called the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. Passed by Congress in 1975, The Act spells out what warranty providers can and cannot do with their products.

This Act prohibits manufacturers from requiring owners to use name-brand parts on their cars. The Magnuson Moss Warranty Act clearly states,

“No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer’s using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade, or corporate name…”

While an automaker can require you to use its brand parts when it gives them to you free of charge and apply for an exemption if it proves its own parts are needed, these situations hardly ever arise.

What Can I Modify on My Car Without Voiding Warranty?

While the Act protects you from wrongfully being denied or having your warranty voided for using aftermarket parts, that doesn’t mean you can go wild and completely deck out your car. It’s smarter to stick to basic upgrades, including your vehicle’s suspension, audio, radio upgrades, tires, or wheels. That’s because these components do not affect your car’s overall safety or performance. Any cosmetic or upholstery upgrades, including custom leather seats, sunroofs, or vinyl graphics, are also safe options.

Performance parts are where things start to get murky. It’s best not to tune your car. If you do, a manufacturer can try to argue that your vehicle’s driveline issues are related to its power boost.

Does Using Non-OEM Parts Void My Warranty? What About My Factory Warranty?

Enhancing your car with non-OEM parts will NOT automatically void your warranty. However, car warranties are chock-full of gray areas. For example, if your aftermarket parts can be connected to drag racing down the highway at 200 miles per hour, the manufacturer will classify this as a misuse of your vehicle, which WILL void your warranty. They tend to be suspicious of any modifications that are racing-related.
