PPF and ceramic coating are often mentioned together, but they are very different products. Understanding the difference saves you money and gets you the right protection.
What paint protection film does
Paint protection film is a thick, clear urethane layer. It physically absorbs impacts, so it is the only option that truly stops rock chips. Many films self heal light scratches.
What ceramic coating does
A ceramic coating is a liquid that bonds to your paint and hardens into a thin, glossy layer. It makes the car easier to wash, repels water and adds shine. It is much thinner than film, so it does not stop rock chips.
Head to head
- Rock chip protection: PPF wins clearly.
- Gloss and water beading: ceramic coating wins.
- Ease of washing: ceramic coating.
- Coverage cost: ceramic coating is less expensive for a full car.
The best answer: often both
Many owners apply PPF to high impact areas like the bumper, hood and mirrors, then add a ceramic product over the whole car for gloss and easy cleaning. Crush offers a ceramic sealant add on ($200) with detailing, a great way to add gloss and protection.
Start with clean, corrected paint
Both products lock in whatever is underneath. If your paint has swirls, paint correction first makes a big difference.
Which to choose for your situation
- New car, lots of highway miles: full front PPF, plus a ceramic sealant over the rest
- Daily driver, tight budget: partial front PPF or a ceramic sealant
- Show car: full body PPF
- Mostly city driving, want easy washing: ceramic sealant with regular details

Frequently asked questions
Can ceramic coating go over PPF?
Yes. Coating over film adds gloss and makes the film easier to clean.
Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?
It resists very light marring, but it does not stop rock chips or real scratches. That is what PPF is for.
Which lasts longer?
Quality PPF generally lasts longer than consumer grade coatings. Durability depends on the product and care.
